A striking insight into the cultural heritage of the area can be gained by admiring the paintings of Raphael and Piero della Francesca in the National Gallery of Le Marche region whose premises are in the Ducal palace of Urbino.
Numerous museums, some of them with extensive collections (such as Pesaro or Fano) and others that are nonetheless interesting, contain examples of the cultural heritage of previous periods and other works of art. The numerous churches and historic libraries in the area also contain art works, as well as interesting collections and documents. However, it is also worth visiting the museums of small towns which have local archaeological finds or exhibits that reflect the rural traditions and lifestyle which thrived until the mid twentieth century.
The smaller towns in the area also have historic theatres which host shows, plays and concerts. The Rossini Opera Festival, which is held in Pesaro during August, is renowned worldwide for its carefully prepared renditions of the works of the great composer performed by leading contemporary musicians. During the summer months, other local towns and cities stage operas and concerts. During the winter the concert season in Pesaro continues in the Auditorium Pedrotti in the Musical Conservatory of the city.
